"Welcome Home" Installation

MATERIALS: bedding sheets, blankets, pillowcases, rugs, Christmas lights, string, tacks
LOCATION: Room 09, School of Art Building, University of Washington
DATE: February 11-18, 2010

When faced with the task of filling a room as large as the one at hand, we decided to transport the space to a different place and time. By building a fort using the warm, comforting glow of Christmas lights, our aim was to revert back to a state in childhood where one could be carefree, even amongst a stressful location such as this university. Interesting, the highest sense of satisfaction we felt was from the actual construction: draping and pinning sheets, building tunnels and passageways, and testing our progress by turning the lights off. The process of building this fort seemed to transport us as well; we became so giddy with excitement that no one person needed to take a leadership role; everyone worked together completely and encouraged all ideas for directions the fort would go.
