"Rumpus" Installation (March 2010)
Materials: photographs printed on backlit paper, wire, hot glue, light bulbs and sockets
Location: Room 09, School of Art Building, University of Washington
Date: March 8–11, 2010
The technique used to create these photographs is manipulating bokeh. By cutting out a shape on black construction paper, placing it in front of a camera lens, and blurring the focus when photographing lights, each light source will be documented in the shape of the cutout. I used this technique to make lanterns similar to children’s shadow lamps, except instead of using nice figures (such as sea animals), I suggested the shapes of monsters based on drawings done by my young cousin. My intentions were to be lighthearted in the fact that these shapes could have at one point in our lives frightened us. My color palate is meant to bring a soothing effect to the viewer, reminding them of being in their childhood bedroom. The intentional height differences in the lanterns is meant to create a surrounding visual field where all of the lanterns can be viewed at once, but never allowing the viewer to focus on all of them at once.
